How the Knockout Bracket Works

Once the group stage ends on June 26, the knockout bracket is set and cannot be changed. Thirty-two teams enter the bracket — 24 group-stage qualifiers plus 8 best third-place finishers. From there it's pure single-elimination: lose once and you're out.

The bracket half your team is placed in is determined by their group finish and the Annex C pairing rules. A strong group-stage run doesn't just get you through — it determines who you face in the Round of 32 and potentially all the way to the semi-finals. Group winners get the softest possible draw; third-place qualifiers get the hardest.

The knockout bracket is the core of any World Cup prediction. Here's what to keep in mind when filling yours out:

• Fill groups first. Your knockout bracket depends on who you think wins each group. A weak group pick ripples through five rounds.
• Don't put too many favorites on the same bracket half. France and Brazil can't both make the Final if they're on the same side. Think about which half each team lands in.
