World Cup 2026 Round of 32 Bracket

The Round of 32 is a brand-new knockout stage introduced for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It has never existed before in World Cup history — and it changes how bracket predictions work.

The Round of 32 at a Glance

  • 32 teams compete in 16 single-elimination matches
  • Dates: June 29 – July 3, 2026
  • All matches played at neutral venues across USA, Canada, Mexico
  • Winners advance to the Round of 16; losers are eliminated
  • Extra time + penalties if level after 90 minutes

How Are the Round of 32 Teams Determined?

32 of the 48 group stage teams advance to the Round of 32:

24 Automatic Qualifiers

Top 2 from each of the 12 groups advance automatically — 2 × 12 = 24 teams.

8 Best Third-Place Teams

The 8 best third-place finishers (from 12 eligible) also advance, ranked by points and goal difference.

How Are Round of 32 Matchups Decided?

FIFA pre-draws the bracket structure. Group winners face selected third-place qualifiers; group runners-up face runners-up from specified groups. The exact matchup grid depends on which third-place teams qualify — there are 495 possible combinations, and FIFA has a pre-determined bracket for each.

This is deliberately complex to avoid top teams meeting too early and to ensure geographic variety in the bracket.
